Introduction

Objectives for today:

• See some of the weaknesses in SMS.
• Gain intuitive (not the full depth mathematical) understanding of two enhancements to SMS.

Most noteworthy enhancements:

• Time-frequency reassignment: obtain better time-frequency estimates for "non-ideal" spectral peaks
• Quadratic Spline Frequency trajectory modeling: allows least-squares formulation of frequency track matching problem to reduce "wild" frequency trajectories seen in traditional SMS.
• Chirp modeling: In addition to frequency and amplitude parameters, determine rate of instantaneous frequency change.
